Anoxia: Its Effects on the Body
نویسنده
چکیده
is devoted to factors which might have a deleterious effect upon apparently normal spermatozoa, with chapters on spermigration in the female secretions, special technics in spermatozoal study, the longevity of spermatozoa in vivo, the effect of temperature on the survival of spermatozoa in vitro, and abnormalities in the female which inhibit impregnation. There is a discussion of artificial insemination, including selection of a donor, the technic of artificial insemination, medicolegal aspects, and proof of fertilization. The several contraceptive technics are reviewed and given an evaluation. Certain factors contributing to azoospermia, oligospermia and necrospermia are reviewed, and a few therapeutic measures are discussed. The book is concluded with a discussion of "theoretical" factors in fertility and sterility and in the control of sex, with a final chapter entitled "Looking forward: Some unknown factors in the evaluation of spermatozoa." In many ways this is an unsatisfactory book, doubtless due to its reflecting the highly inexact and unsatisfactory state of information on this important subject. Some aspects are given a treatment which seems extremely uncritical; but this sort of treatment is, in this instance, perhaps more effective in emphasizing the inadequacies of present information than would be a criticism labelled as such. CHARLES W. HOOKER.

The effects of anoxia upon animal cells and tissues
Anoxia is a general term denotingoxygen lack regardlessof how orwhere in the body it is produced. There are fourgeneral types of anoxia: anoxic anoxia (anoxemia) , anemicanoxia, stagnant anoxia and histological anoxia. In normal oxygenation oftissues, oxygen is given up to thetissuesbecause of a difference in oxygen tension in the capil-laries and the tiss...
متن کاملMechanism of Action of the Thyroid Hormone on the Heart
SUMMARY The foliowing cardiac effects may be attributed to thyroxin: 1-Thyroxin augments all anaerobic processes in the body includ::ng the heart, and decreases the glycogen content of the heart ( 1, 2, 5, 27). The resistance of the heart to anoxia is increased in hyperthyroidism ( 25). 2- Thyroxin influences the cardiac weight and prevents cardiac atrophy (3, 8, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21, 30...
متن کاملEffects of anoxia on postarteriolar pulmonary vascular resistance.
IN THE FOREGOING communication Hiirlimann and Wiggers reported that the blood flow of a lung lobe perfused under constant pressure was reduced during progressively developing anoxia. It could not be determined from these experiments whether the increased pulmonary vascular resistance resulted from direct action of anoxia or involved indirect reactions; nor could the site of action be assessed. ...
متن کاملInbreeding and Its Effects on Body Weight,Kleiber Ratio, Body Measurements, Greasy Fleece Weight and Reproductive Traits of Makooei Sheep Breed
A pedigree file consisting of 5860 individuals, 167 sires and 1582 dams collected at Makooei sheep breeding station (MSBS) during a period of 24 years (1990 to 2013) was used to calculate the inbreeding coefficients to reveal any probable effects of inbreeding (F) on the studied traits. The studied traits were classified to the five main groups including body weight, Kleiber ratio, body measure...
متن کاملNewborn Hypoxia/Anoxia Inhibits Cardiomyocyte Proliferation and Decreases Cardiomyocyte Endowment in the Developing Heart: Role of Endothelin-1
In the developing heart, cardiomyocytes undergo terminal differentiation during a critical window around birth. Hypoxia is a major stress to preterm infants, yet its effect on the development and maturation of the heart remains unknown. We tested the hypothesis in a rat model that newborn anoxia accelerates cardiomyocyte terminal differentiation and results in reduced cardiomyocyte endowment in...
